With all the same dates of mfg on your drums, and what appear to be original Yamaha batter heads, that's unusual for a kit from the early 80's. With all the Tama and Ludwig kits of that era, you see far fewer of the Yamaha's, and not all that many 5000's. And these early kits generally beat the power tom craze, making them more desirable today. So despite making plenty of them - they are far outnumbered by similar drums produced from 1983-1992. My early 1981 Tour Series kit is very early in the 8000 run. So an early 1980/1981 is in a way more unusual. Yamaha and other MIJ producers really began cranking the drums out in 1982-1884. And with the Phillipine Mahogany shells, those are very nice sounding drums, not much different than 7000 or 8000 series of that era. Could just be one of the first kits off the line. It's possible something "non-Yamaha" was made to fit on these.Ĭlick to expand.Considering 1981 may be the first year of the 5000, you might have a "special" kit with those Nov 1980 production dates. It doesn't look like anything in the 1980's catalogs which are normally rotating ball-clamp mounts. The tom mounting hardware has me stumped. Don't ever recall seeing them all made in the same month.a cool feature. In all the 80's kits I've looked at, the drums usually are made within a 2-6 month window. Having all your drums with a "QY" mfg code is unusual. If your drums only have the single badge w/serial number (and not a blank one on the opposite side) then they are earlier 1980's.and in this case 1980. And it's the mahogany layers in the Tour and Stage series that give then a deeper and more tonal quality.vs the sharp attack of the all birch recording series/recording customs. I bet they still sound pretty darn nice as the shells were nicely built. Rather than the Birch/Mahogany plies of the 8000, the 5000's were a mix of mahogany and other woods (see catalogs below).
It's earlier than I'd have thought.but makes more sense than your kit being Nov 1990. So Nov 1980 for your 5000 series "could" be possible. Now it's possible they started making the 8000's in late 1980 as production of drums shifted from some in Taiwan back to 100% in Japan. The 5000 series didn't show up until the 8000 Tour Series began.at least by early 1981 (the date of my 8000's). The QY could signify Nov 1980 or Nov 1990.
Some periods just date with 2 letters and others are 2 letters plus numbers. If just a QY and no following numbers (ie QY 2345) that would typically be first half of the 1980's.
